Rear shocks on `03 XC70

Hi,
My wife took her XC to dealer this am to check out what I thought was maybe a broken shock mount.
She just had a caller from dealer to say the driver`s side rear shock needs to be replaced @ a cost of $484. Kinda` pricey for one shock & labor.
I just checked out IPD & their Sachs shocks for AWD are $97.
Shouldn`t shocks be replaced in pairs?
Your suggestions?
