battery vs alternator C70

After being away for 3 weeks My 2004 C70 would not start.
Battery is original and took a charge and is working, but since it is at its normal life, I am purchasing a new one.
The question is, can I harm the alternator if I don't rush to exchange it by overworking the alternator or is this over concern ?
