Are A/C spring-loaded connectors hard to release? 850

Replacing the receiver/dryer after bottom blew out. Attempting to disconnect the one refrigerant line with the spring-loaded connector. The special release tool sinks into the connector about 3/8", at which point, I assume, I should be able to pul the connector apart . . . but no go. Is there a trick to this that I missing?
