starter going bad 850 93

My ind. mechanic told me I will be needing a new starter soon, because he noticed it kicks out at times. I have noticed it too. He said it has some special engagement mechanism instead of a solenoid. Does anyone out there know how that works? I checked for starters on some parts sites and they listed solenoids with the motors, so I am not sure what it has or what I should order.

By the way has anyone changed this starter on their own?
