AW55-50SN TRANSPLANT (no pun intended) V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 V70 non-turbo with 175K miles on an AW55-50 5-speed transmission that has finally given up the ghost...only reverse, 1st and 2nd gear work. From all accounts I have read, this transmission is very likely the worst automatic transmission that AW has ever built. I want to save the car, but do NOT want to install another AW55-50.

Can the AW42-50LE be installed instead? Should I go for a low-mileage AW55-50?
