transmission noise V70-XC70 98

at 50,000 miles my x/c developed a clunking noise, while shifting, at slow speeds, & especially going around corners. dealer said transmission fluid was problem. changed fluid - still the problem. now dealer says need to changing to synthetic trans fluid, and am scheduled to have this done. trans. sounds like its about to fall out. anyone had or heard about this problem??
