Climate Control Questions. 850 1993

When I start my car the two lights on the climate control (rec. and ac.) blink for quite a while. Does anyone know what this means? Also I cannot adjust where I want the air (heat) to go. I can turn the dial all I want, even on auto and all I get is a mixture of air coming out of everywhere. I want to try and fix this problem before winter really hits and I need the front defrost at -40 so I can see. Thanks in advance.
