Apparent fuel injection problem S60 2001

While I was up at the Gilmore having a great time an associate was using our 2001 S60T5.
It started giving him problems of bogging down, not accelerating when given the gas, black smoke, etc.
He took it to a local mechanic who does NOT specialize in Volvos (at my direction -
Tulsa is 40 miles away and the car was not that driveable).
The mechanic told me after I got back that it was giving code P1171.
He had put in a rebuilt mass airflow sensor, cleared the code and it seemed great.
But in 20 miles it was doing the same thing again.
He cleared the code and it was good for another 20 miles and did the same thing again.
He does not have the VCT2000, and I don't think anyone in Bartlesville does.
He suspects that the oxygen sensor may have wiped out. He has one so he will put it in.
Does this scenario sound familiar to you guys? The dealer is about 45 miles away,
so I would like to avoid taking it to Tulsa if I can.
Meanwhile there are 4 of us trying to get by with one functional car that is fifteen hundred
miles late for its 150,000 mile service because of the 3400 miles we drove it the last couple weeks.
Thanks for any help you can give!
