Out of Sync?

I just purchased a 99 S-80 from a police auction, and did not get a key with the car. I was able to have a key made from my local dealership, but was advised that I will have to have the car towed there, to have it programmed. The key itself doesn't look like anything special (aside from being a laser cut variety), does it have a chip inside the plastic end? I am currently waiting for a new oil pan before I go any further with the car, and have not tried to start it yet, but when I fit the key into the ignition switch, and turned it to the ON position, all of the usual dash lights illuminated, and I was able to read the odometer. What exactly does this programming procedure entail?
