Lower octane means easier starts? 850 96

I was told by my Volvo dealer today that I should use 87 octane gasoline in my car as it is easier to combust and would provide a more reliable start (I had come in after the car would not start a couple days ago but had since been OK). Is this fact or fairytale? I am more up on my diesel technology and was able to figure this one out. Also, if this engine has a high (10.5:1?) compression ratio isn't it going to ping under load with the low octance fuel as opposed to the owners manual specified super grade stuff?
