So I did my first oil/filter change. Got Mobil 1, and had to get the filter cartridge from my Volvo dealer since Fram and Mobil have yet to do one. I'm at 2400 miles, and I know some people will yell that I shouldn't go syn until 7 or 8 thousand. Well, I respectfully disagree, mainly due to the fact that it already had a syn blend stock, and the new Saabs come full syn right off the floor. (If I start burning/leaking, I'll post an apology)
Super easy! All I needed was a socket wrench with only two different sized heads, and a filter wrench. I put the car up on ramps, but I think an extra 2 inches of height is all I would have needed, so maybe just use some wood blocks. I unbolted the plastic shield, (do they make metal aftermarket ones?) put my pan under the obvious plug, and let it flow. (warm your engine first) I let it drip for about 15 minutes while I went off to do other stuff. Then I replaced the plug (get a new plug washer from your dealer), removed the filter cap, replaced the cartridge and rubber gasket, then put it back on. Tighten hand tight (it gets very slow right away due to the gasket, so hand tighten once it is fully threaded) then do another 1/4 turn at most with the filter wrench.
Filled it up with 6 quarts, backed it off the ramps, ran it a few minutes, let it sit a few minutes, checked the level. Perfect!
Benefits: I know my lube was used and not stol....misplaced. I know my drain plug and filter were tightened properly. Not a drip on my engine after filling. Had the opportunity to coat more bolts under the plastic shield with T-9. Good to know your vehicle a bit more than the average schmoe. CHEAPER.
Drawbacks: None, unless you're a lazy one who'd rather be reading this forum and paying someone else to lay their grubby hands on your rig.
