Hi Guys,
I have a '96 850R 5 speed, which over the last few months has developed a rattle in the transmission. Really can only be heard when idling in neutral with your foot off the clutch. Tends to be worse with the A/C turned on. Goes away as soon as I put my foot on the clutch. Mainly heard when it is hot. Can ratlle quite loudly at times - easily audible from outside and enough for others to notice and ask about it.
I suspect it is backlash in the transmission - certainly sounds like it. Has anyone had experience with rattling in a manual transmission in an 850, and if you have, what was the problem. The car is presently under extended warranty, and I suspect the dealer is going to try to claim it is the clutch, release bearing or pilot bearing, none of which are covered by the warranty. Now it sure doesn't sound like any of those items to me, but I am interested if other people have experienced problems with rattles in the manual transmission.
Thanks,
