'93-'94 850 Plastic Belly Pan 850 93

Anyone know the purpose of the plastic belly pan that covers the bottom of the engine (the oil pan area) on the early 850's and why Volvo stopped installing them on the later model years? I peeked under a 93 850 the other day it looked like it would help keep debris from going up into the engine area. It also looked like it would help smooth the flow of air under the car to help with gas mileage.
