ignition switch problems? 850 1995

I have a 1995 850 nonturb with 230K. Intermittently it will not crank. That is, not even selonoid noise with turning the key. If you try the switch a second time it will crank just fine. This only happen once a week or even less often. My mechanic wants to put in a new starter but it seems this could be the ignition switch. How do you rule out the ignition switch as being the problem. Thanks
