I want to have a spare ignition key for my 04 V70. I believe the key fob's are a dealer only item. I should say a dealer only to make them work item. They can be had on ebay for 20 bucks, but I understand the dealer wants around $200 to program them, and I think they would want to sell you a key fob with they switch key as it will need to be specially cut for each car. I did find a guy selling keys on ebay that are not the FOB keys, but they have a chip. Here is the ad:
"2003 2004 2005 VOLVO S60 S80 S90 V70 XC90 S70 CHIP KEY"
"This listing is for a BRAND NEW Volvo transponder chip key. This key will work on many Volvo years and models (including those listed in the auction title). Once purchased, this key needs to be cut and programmed to your vehicle. We are selling this key at less than 1/4 of the dealer MSRP ($89.95). Once programmed this key can be used to open your doors AND can to start your vehicle (as it is equipped with a transponder chip).
It is always a good idea to have a spare key in care of remote failure. Don't get stranded if your remote malfunctions. Also, if all keys are lost you will be required to change your vehicles main ECU. This can cost several hundred or thousands of dollars.
KEY PROGRAMMING
This key must be cut and coded by your dealer, a Volvo specialist, or an auto locksmith specialist. If required, upon purchase, we can refer you to an auto locksmith in most cities that will cut and code this for you for a fraction of what the dealer will charge."
Anyone have knowledge about these type keys and if they work?
I know I can get a valet key from the dealer, but I really need a spare key that will start my car as I only have one right now.
