As you know, the dealers charge 8 hours book to replace a fuel pump for AWD cars because of the difficulty of dropping the saddle tank. Unlike the 850 FWD, the pump is in the forward portion of the passengerside tank and there is no cover plate for easy access.

PAULII has found a short cut which does not involve cutting out a portion of the floor board. This procedure is not meant for the novice mechanic, as you will find out by reading this:

"Here it goes. Jack up all 4 wheels, I put the front just off the ground and the rear was 5 notches on my 5 ton jack stand. Remove the plate inside hatch for the fuel pump wires. I used a 4X4 on both sides to the front of the rear trailing arms and then placed the jack stand under 4X4 to support the car Remove plastic stone guards, remove center dif support bolt, remove both tank strap bolts, support right side suspension,remove both rear tires, loosen left side suspension bolts about 3 turns each,do not loosen the three bolts up on front of trailing arm, loosen tank fill pipe at body, remove all 6 bolts holding suspension on right side, lower suspension. Gas tank will drop a bit, use a 6 foot pry bar and wedge between top of tank and body ( I used an 8X4X1/2 inch piece of wood to pry against on top of tank ). Lift up on pry bar untill the plastic collar is clear of rear floor pan, place jack stand under prybar to keep gas tank at that position. Have a suitable drain bucket, place under fuel pump retainer. Remove both fuel lines, Snap-on angled trim tool works great, cut the wires for fuel pump, release screw for fuel pump and drain the fuel. Remove fuel pump. Cut wires along top of gas tank, do not try and remove the foam tape that holds wires in place. Install new fuel pump, make sure fuel line fittings are 10 and 2 o'clock position, feed fuel pump wire to open port in floor. If you want you can hold down the wire with pieces of duct tape. The second time I did the job I didn't bother. Reverse procedeure to finish instalation. The book time for this job is 8 hours. It is almost impossible to follow directions on a northern car because of the corrosion, so this is a shortcut that worked for me. "

I have no idea if this will work for you. It is a bit much for me. The procedure described above is for a 2000 XC, the 2001+ might be different.
