Skid Plate 850 93

Yo! Experts! Help me with this! When changing the oil and filter last week, I decided to leave that "skid plate" off from under the engine. It obviously has some purpose, but I recalled that last year in deep snow, the car seemed to lose traction due to (what?) I know the front tires weren't the problem, as they were new Michelans. I figgered the large plate under the engine was acting like a toboggan and lifting the front end off the ground in deep snow. So I left it off. Now I don't have problems with traction, but the engine doesn't come up to full operating temperature. Should I put that plate back? Need a thermostat? Been working on cars for 40+ years. Volvo is a new experience...
