Cabin temp sensor grill 98-00

Has anyone ever removed the grill for the cabin temp sensor? I took the sensor out to clean it and it will not reseat. The catches are at 12 & 6 o'clock, but only the top seats in the catch. I am wondering if the bottom plastic broke on the grill and if so, how do I get the thing out!

Very frustrating with ham hocks like mine.
