Snow chains V70-XC70 2000

I'm going to the snow in the next couple of days "Bear Valley, CA" and I kinda want to get some snow chains. The guy at the dealership said if i need chains I shouldn't be driving in those conditions, but I have the stock tires. Do I need chains? what kind should I get & where? Whould it burn my tranny? -thanks
