Noisy TRACS operation ? S70 98

I just drove my 98 S70-T5A (65,000 miles) on ice for the first time in a year. I have a steep uphill driveway, and if I caused the tires to spin at low speed, a very noticable clicking/racheting sound came from the left front. It sounded like a rachet drive socket being turned fairly fast in the backward direction. In the previous 2 - 3 times that similar icy condition has occurred in the past 3 years, no sound has been made other than the tires spinning. Is this normal?
