Replace motor: used or Volvo re-mfr? 850 95

Failed rod bearing led to damaged crankshaft. Consensus is replace the motor vs labor cost to rebuild.

Mechanics are saying used motor for 95 850 non-turbo is every bit as good or sometimes better new or rebuilt. Used still has integrity vs cracked open and rebuilt. 50k miles is no problem.

'New' is re-drilled used block with same components if they spec 'same as new'. Otherwise they're new. I've been told this re-manufacture is by contracted sources - so no direct Volvo oversight and a chance of cost cutting.

Used motor with 40k-60k runs around $2500 in my area. Ebay has one for $1100, from web dismantler parting out front end wreck - who's to say? Factory replacement is about $4300 for long block (I hear damaged crank is billed back with core replacement). I think I want whoever does install to source and take ownership of motor so only I point fingers, but this comes at cost of their markup.

Labor quotes are anywhere from $1000 to $3000.

Who's telling it right?

Thanks

Kevin
