Gas Milage 850 1996

Anyone else had this experience? I bought a 96 850 Turbo wagon two months ago. Love the car but i was getting terrible gas milage,about 10 mpg around town. I was using premium 91-93 octane. Switched to mid grade 89 octane and immediately started getting 15-16 mpg ,which is about what I expected.Also ,I seem to get better mpg in sport mode than ECONOMY !Anyone have a similar experience or explanation?
