5000 miles and check engine S40-V40 2001

SO yesterday it is about 20 degrees out, driving up an incline and the check engine light comes on. Dealer says today it was gas cap warning. I have not touched the gas cap in a week since I last filled it! I thought this was resolved in the 2001 model. Any ideas? Car running fine, no charge at dealer but I was late to work today (which could be considered a positive!)
