Replacement Axle - Thread/Nut smaller than OEM 850 1997

Time to replace that reluctant axle (driver side right now) and I see that the "new" axle has a smaller nut (brass, about 1/3 the size of the original) and the threads are smaller, too, so the old nut is too big.

The axle seemed to go in ok, but I am not cranking down on the nut yet.

Did they give me the wrong part? Will this work?
