Never used spare tire has rubber torn off look 850 1995

Pulled it out to check the air, but where it has some holes in the tread - presumably to accomodate water on the road - nearby rubber looks like it's peeling turning the holes into strips. Not on the whole tire, but in a few spots. You'd think a mouse was chewing on it. Any BTDT on tread anomalies. Original owner with no recollection of having used the spare.
