Does a 850 T5 need a catalytic converter ? 850 1994

Hi again from NZ

The catalytic converter on my car has developed a loud rattle and needs replacing. Does the 850 T5 require a catalytic converter to run at peak performance ? Can it be replaced with a standard silencer ?

Of course this is does not take into account the ecological issue of pollutants in the atmosphere.
