EMI Catalytic Converter vs. Volvo 850

Starting to experiece telltale signs of catalytic converter failure on 97 N/A 850. Strong, weird smell (not rotten eggs yet, but close), rattling during idle and slow acceleration. Had it up on a lift and banged cat with rubber hammer and sure enough I can hear walnut shells inside. Trying to determine if I need to find and fork over $599.00 vs. $150 for EMI replacement. Any recommendations and experience with EMI #40257 -- as well as any other options that may be available -- will be greatly appreciated.
