alternator 850 96

my 850 recently died on the way to work with no warning whatsoever. turned out the alternator was not charging, but the warning light never came on (the bulb is good, and it lights when the car is started). the dealer was no help-he just charged me $600 to replace the alternator and sent me on my way. They had no idea why no low voltage indication, what was actually wrong with the charging system or if the problem would reoccur. volvo customer service blew me off with "you'll get no light when you're overcharging". duh! any ideas out there? thanks
