Catalytic Converter Replacement 2004 S 60 non-turbo S60 2004

My catalytic converter sounds like "stones in a bucket" when I accelerate. My muffler guy (who I trust) says I need to replace it. Problem is, unlike my 240's 740's and 940's this one will cost in the range of $1,000 to install. First question: Is there a brand that I should stay away from? I see them on-line as cheap as $300 and as high as $700. Second question: can I install using wrenches or do I need to torch and weld the unit back in place? Appreciate any input.
