Greetings Volvo enthusiasts and those who own one out of necessity or inheritance.
The ABS unit , a type of braking computer in charge of the speedometer, tracs system or ABS braking, the transmission input sensor, engine output sensor and other things has failed in my V70 1999 and V-70 2000 at 113k and 126k respectively. The unit is capable of forcing your Volvo to shut off or to go into limp-home mode. In the second failure I sent the unit to be rebuilt by Victor Rocha somewhere in the San Bernardino Valley east of L.A. and while I never endorse anything here for fear of appearing to be a shill, this man fixed the unit and sent it back to me quickly for $120. I would recommend him to those who have yet to have that little black box under the pressure distribution block of their master cylinder fail but will certainly see it fail if they hold onto their Volvo long enough. It would not be a bad idea to act preemptively as ABS failure repaired by the dealership is $850. You must follow his instructions for removal and installation and have a E-5 torx ready (a socket that turns rare torx nuts as opposed to recessed torx heads) which Victor sells.
A tip of the hat to Klaus who has made yet another good call.
