Heater core pipes 850

The next thing on my endlesss list is the heater core. I had a look today from the passenger side, because that kick panel was already down. There was a left over drop of antifreeze on one of the cooling pipes.

QUESTION:

Should I brave the freezing temps/snow and wait to go a pick&pull to replace the 2 metal pipes that come down from the firewall? The new and improved aluminum pipes from the S/V70 1998-2000 are supposed to be much better than the metal pipes on the early 850's. Or are my pipes already aluminum (1996)? Hard to tell from the passenger side.

I read on IPD that the old versions tend to get crusty and the O rings do not seat properly. Any of you find out the hard way? If you used an emory cloth to polish off the crud, did that work?

There are no S/V70's in the P&P currently, just 4 850s - 1994&5.

I am going to pull out the carpet on the driver's side, as it is soaked! There was a WeatherTech mat over the carpet that trapped the moisture. Passenger side is fine.

Thanks...
