I'm looking to replace my door speakers, at least in the fronts. One is intermittent and the other is getting buzzy. I've read many posts and still have a few questions. I'm trying to get as much information as I can before tearing into the door panels.
I have some NOS Infinity Kappas I bought for another car but never installed. One set is a pair of 5.25" two-way components. (This is pretty much a no brainer.) The other set is a pair of 5"x7" two-way components. I'm wondering if I can install these without too much modification.
I realize one challenge is the offset for the Volvo speakers. The stock models are mounted on a stilted plastic arrangement that sets the speaker up off the steel door surface. I have read that this can be removed from the stock speakers and attached to the replacements. I think this will work with the 5'25s but doubtful about the 5x7s
Questions:
1. If I can fashion some stilts to offset the speaker from the door, is there room to install a 5x7? The 5" dimension seems to be okay, but the 7" might run into some interior door trim. The hole in the door is 4.5" in diameter and more than an inch deep. This should handle the magnet. The grill is about 6" in diameter. I'm just wondering if the 7" length will get jammed up against anything. Has anyone tried this?
2. How close is too close for the magnet to be to the metal door frame?
3. Is the front door speaker space larger/smaller than the rears?
I'm going to press on with this, but I'd love any advice or experience you can share.
Oh, another reason I'm putting in new speakers is that I picked up a working SC-901 for $20 at the pick n pull and bought a Volvo console amp on ebay.
As alway, thanks!!
