what have i or havent i done 850 1996

Hi all, i finally finished the head gasket replacement on my n/a 850 glt. Boy o boy, there is some ugly parts to this job. The heater pipe to the head connection for example. I know someone out there has a better way to do it, but hopefully i will never have to do this again and i seem to remember muttering to myself that next time i will turn the car into a 3 foot cube!
I had the head serviced ( valve grind )
new water pump
new timing belt
cleaned the iac and throttle body
new pcv with 5/8"hose mod
the car was nose up on stands for 2 weeks
the engine sounds fantastic and has lots of get up and go
so now the bad news
the engine idles at 1800 revs ( every thing back to good specs so i thought )
initially when put into gear and accelerated the car would stall such as torque converter lockup i thought.
fluid level low and adjusted
no problem with reverse gear
car stays in a low gear and will not upchange
does kick down to first
having got under way and backed off, when throttle re applied, the transmission seems to slip and only takes off when a lot of throttle applied

SO, what have i not connected--connected incorrectly--inadvertantly disconnected or screwed up.
Some vacuum lines maybe?
another problem coincidently?

I am looking forward to your words of wisdom
David
