Oil change questions V70-XC70

Oil change in 2009 XC70...48,000 miles. Until now, the Dealer did the changes (as I just bought the car last year)...now, it's my turn. Done tons of changes in my life...but don't want any snags on this one. Filter- Do I get a 36mm socket for the filter cover? Is this the recommended method?
I will be changing to synthetic (M-1), as this is what I use in my other cars. What weight is recommended for the 2009 XC70? It is summer in NY... I have 5-30w in the garage, but I think it's too thin for this time of year. Thoughts?
