Just bought a 850, got some questions... 850 1994

I'm a new Volvo owner, never had one before, but I'm very happy with what I just bought - 1994 850 GLT 5sp with 89K and all options. Got it extremely cheap $5500, but the a/c doens't seem to be working. Yes, I've read through all the msgs regarding the evaporator core but I want to make sure because even the little green light that shows the a/c is on is not working. I've checked the fuse for the a/c compressor fuse 31 I think and it's ok. Is is the compressor or it just needs some charging? Also, is there like a good manual for repairs on the car or chilton's ok? Thanks!
