Have the VDO cluster. Odometer was not working. Opened it up and found the small gear very tight on the pod gear, brittle, and missing a tooth. Before going back together I would like to bring the odometer reading up to actual mileage. Difference is about 20500. I have heard about and tried the pencil eraser in the drill routine. Works but tedious, takes forever, and concerned about eraser debris in the mechanism. Thinking about dremel tool and a small polishing wheel, but do not see that as much better. Two questions. One should the new gear and pod go in dry or with some small amount of lube. Gears are delron. Second question, what is the voltage to the motor from the circuit board? Could one power up the motor from an external source and let it drive the odometer to the desired reading. Wondering if a nine volt battery would drive the motor or is that perhaps even too much voltage? Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
