aluminum control arms 850

My mechanic put a new clamp on the CV boot that came loose and noticed my control arm bushings are really worn......I have the aluminum arm with replaceable ball joint on my 94.....Haynes manual says the all in one steel arms and the aluminum arms are not interchangeable.......all the auto parts stores say steel arems are ok for the 94.......has anyone taken the aluminum arms off and replaced with steel? Thx.
