odd intermittent low speed noise/things to look for V70-XC70 2001

considering a 2001 XC with 145 K - appears well maintained but makes an intermittent whining sort of noise that comes and goes at speeds below 15 MPH - stops when you touch the brakes, appears to be coming from the left front - any ideas, I dont mind the noise if it's not a mega$ fix or dangerous - any other things I should look for? First Volvo, need your help!
