what's up with the factory foglights? S70 98

When I bought my S70 T-5 (used) it came with factory foglights installed. Based on my experience with aftermarket Hella Micro DE's (a great foglight package, by the way) I realized something wasn't quite right. On closer look I saw the stock lights did not frame properly in the opening...they sat about 1/2in too low, and the bottom part of the lens was actually behind the lower lip of the opening. Most of the light was uselessly hitting the ground directly in front of the car. I asked my Volvo tech if this was normal, and he said they all fit that way. Yikes. Are these foglights or decorations?

After many modifications, I've actually repositioned the stock foglights (made by Hella) so that they provide useful light.

Here's how I did it: I removed the torx screws from the bottom of the mounting brackets and cut the nub that receives the screw flush with the back of the airdam. I then bent the bottom of the bracket back about 1/2 inch (brute force and a giant pair of channel locks). I reinstalled with a shorter, wider screw. This raises the lights and allows them to fit in the opening, and spreads the light toward the sides. Then I removed the two torx screws from the light fixture (facing the center of the car), peeled away some goop, and shimmed them about 1/4". This spreads the light even more toward the sides of the car. Then I used the adjusting screw to raise the lights to full extension. For added measure, I used Novus acrylic polish to clean up the pits and scratches in the lenses.

Along with my new E-code headlamp lenses, I now have the best lighting I've ever had - and am just waiting for the cost of HID aftermarket kits to come down to earth.
