I have a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 wagon with 138,000 (+) miles that has a a rather loud front suspension rattle / knocking noise. This only occurs at low to medium speeds when I hit a bump in the road. It is usually a indentation in the road surface where this occurs like a tar strip on an asphalt road surface. I thought at first that it might be the torque rod that supports the upper engine mount because it moves rather easily compared to when the car was new. Although now I am also considering a cracked engine mount, lower engine mount bushings, and also the bushings that are suspending the frame that the engine and transmission are bolted to. Suspension bushings might also be the problem as well. Nothing in the suspension appears to be loose upon inspection and shaking, prying with a flat bar, large screw driver shows no apparent loose fittings.
The front struts are relatively new replaced in the last 3,000-4,000 miles with new mounts at the top, new control rods at the the bottom as well as a 4 point alignment.
Any suggestions on what it may be? Am I looking in the wrong place perhaps?
any response would be appreciated.
