I've been awaiting some crash test results (IIHS has done several tests of just the WHIPS system in the S80)and the first set of data is now available. If you follow this link and input Volvo and S80 for make and model choices and use the 'Search' button, not 'Enter', you will get to the results from the NHTSA:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ncap/ncap.cfm?lookup=yes&vehclass=car&vehdesc=Car
In short, it looks like the S80 performed phenomenally well in the side-impact collision tests (frontal tests will be done later). I tried to compare the S80s numbers with those of the other 5-star rated passenger cars (of which there are very few) and the S80 scored lower than all in others in both thoracic trauma and pelvis deceleration. The only other luxury cars I could find that had been side-impact tested and received 5-stars were the smaller Lexus ES300 and Mercedes C230.
I'm now awaiting frontal impact scores. More telling for me will be the European FIA NCAP score is they ever get around to testing this car.
