Re: 30K cost? 850 97

Repost from the Nissan vs Volvo thread that went into

cost per milage. 30K service down at the bottom ($431

including front brake service; $286 without brake work).

Point of thread is that service is probably the least

expensive component of car ownership:

I had a look at the records and the cost of ownership, in

general, not just Volvo, it is a lot more expensive then I

thought. This is for our 1995 GLT wagon with 40K miles. Here

are the main costs for 4.5 years with some rounded to 5 years

for things that are prepaid thru the year (like registration).

(These are probably accurate to 5% based on what records I

have):

1. 5 Years Auto Insurance: $3250.00

2. CA Sales Tax (8.25%, 1 time at purchase): $2558.00

3. 5 Years CA Vehicle Registration: $2530.00

4. Fuel (40K miles): $2272.00

5. Maintenance and repairs: $1332.00

Total is $9384 not counting one-time sales tax (or 21 to 23

cents/mile). I guess we need to drive more to drop the cost per

mile :)

Notes by number:

1. Calc'd by taking current annual premium and multiply by 5.

2. Sales tax in CA means the county makes more then the dealer.

Added because people overlook at purchase.

3. Vehicle registration is based on car value and reduces with time.

95: $706; 96: $603; 97: $500 (est); 98: $400(est); 99: $325.

CA rates reduced about 20% last year and drop another 10% next year.

About 90% is tax detectable. The annual bill really hurts.

4. 40K miles / 22 MPG = 1818 gallons at $1.25 gallon (regular currently

at $1.50 here and 5 year low is around $1.00).

5. Includes all dealer recommended service; new battery and tires.

Serviced by dealers. On the 10K service we were ripped-off by the

selling dealer (Royal Volvo, now out of business) at $170.00

(where was the Brickboard in 95?). I would probably not be a

happy owner if they had continued to service the car (compare it

to the 20K service costs). Battery and tires are new and that

bumped up the total maintenance even though they should be good

thru 60K miles. Service details:
