Re: Vibration in V70 AWD V70-XC70 98

Based upon some of the posts on a number of Volvo forums and a converstation with a mechanic who specializes in suspension and tires I decided to look down the alignment, tire path even though Volvo calims to have looked at these factors in depth. Well, the independent mechanic drives the car, he evaluates speed, steering, brakes, throttle position to get a better feel for the problem. He then puts my V70 on the rack and within five minutes finds three of the four Michelin XGTV4 do not run true, they are out of round, two of them badly. In fact the right front looks so bad that it doesn't take a trained eye to see it. He then mounts four Dunlop D40M2 tires on the alloys, carefully balancing them and placing the two that display display the best characteristics on the front axle. This mechanic was able to accomplish more in 30 minutes than Volvo was able to in five months. The vibration has been greatly diminished. No longer do I have it between 35 mph and 45 mph, with a strong vibration at 42 mph that is noticeable on any road surface, in any gear, I now have a very slight sensation around 40 mph that is only present on the smoothest of roads. Much more pleasant, in fact if I was not so tuned into the problem I would probably not even notice it. As an added bonus the Dunlop's are a superior tire, displaying quicker turn in, greater steering feel, better compliance (by far), the only minus is they are slightly noisier, and being a ZR rated tire I will definetly have to change over to my Blizzaks when the snow finally arives here in the Rockies.

This whole mess was totally avoidable. If Volvo had refered me to an expert on tires this would have been taken care of in one day. Instead I had five months of repeated repair attempts, frustrating phone calls, and an really unpleasant meeting with a Volvo representative who did not take the time to drive and properly evaluate the problem. This of course has really caused me to question my purchase and be vocal about it. I understand that even a maufacturer such as Michelin can and does make an occasional defective product. If this would have been addressed by Volvo quickly and correctly I would not have had the chance to become so frustrated and dissatisfied. Hopefully this closes this chapter and I can start having a good ownership experience. Thanks for everyones input.
