Re: Electonic problems 400 1987

As usual it depends a bit on the car. Some have lots and lots

of problems with the electrical system, while others (from the

same year) run fine without any problems whatsoever..

Having said that, the 480's from 86 and 87 do seem to suffer

more than most from electrical problems. Most of these problems

stem from poorly designed connector types that don't keep

out all moisture, causing corrosion of the contacts.

The 'trick' with these cars is to go along all electrical

components and connectors and treat them with something like WD-40,

which helps to remove the oxidation and repels water.

A known trouble-point is the signal-wire connector to the starter

motor. It gets corroded on the starter motor end, which causes

it to do nothing but go 'click' when you try to start.

For the 480 the 'pop up' headlights can give problems as well,

which sometimes needs a replacement motor.

It's a time-consuming job, but when done properly it should

prevent (or solve) a lot of the problems.

If you're seriously interested in the car, then get your hands

on a haynes manual and work through that. It should give you a good

idea about what to expect. It's 11 yearsold, so do expect to spend

some time 'fixing it up'..

The engine is usually pretty tough, although the gearbox could be giving

problems if it was driven wildly. Volvo installed strengthened

gearboxes in later models.

As usual: look for signs of rust, especially in the wheel arches

and under/between the rear lights.

The rear ligthts sometimes develop problems with fungus or algae

growing on the inside..

You probably will want to install new/different shock absorbers

and springs as the 'volvo' set tends to be a little slugghish and soft.

Putting it on lowered eibach springs and adding 16 or 17" rims makes

it a pretty 'hot' little car :-)

It's pretty much a 'collectors car' and there should be 480-clubs

and regstries in most countries. The original 'black with red

striping' 480's are really hard to get..

For a little 'dynamite' you should try to get a turbo and install

some performance mods. The HP doesn't sound too good (between

150 and 170 hp tuned), but the 480 can be easily brought down to

about 1000 to 1100 kg's, which does give it quite a 'nimble'

feeling.

Hope this helps..

Bye, Arno.
