Re: Painting grey trim to match body??? 850 94

I checked my Volvo service literature book on "Paintwork Repairs". There's a chapter that identifies the type of plastic used on each series car. For example, on the 850:

Door mirror: modified PPO (Noryl PX 1112)

Rear spoiler: modified PPO (Noryl BN 13)

Bumper: PP/EPDM (~30% rubber)

Door sill: PC/PBT (Xenoy CL 101)

Front spoiler: PP/EPDM (~30% rubber)

Trim under headlamp: PA/PPO

For each of the paint manufacturers that Volvo has used (there are 6!), this book provides the proper paint procedure and materials. For example, if you wish to paint PP/EPDM plastic using the DuPont system, the procedure is:

1. Clean: Thinner 3871S

2. Bonding primer: Flexible Sealer 800R

3. Primer: HS Primer 1020R

4. Solid Color: Centari 5000+flex additive 805R

5. Base coat/Color coat system: Centari 6000+flex additive 805R

Regardless of the plastic type, the specified pre-paint procedure is:

1. Heat the plastic before cleaning (to facilitate the "sweating" of mold release agents in the plastic)

2. clean surface per supplier recomendation.

3. sand with P600 sandpaper

4. Follow supplier procedures for priming and painting.

So.... it seems that with the proper preparation, painting any kind of plastic is possible. Further, you would think that performing the recommended steps per the paint manufacturer's recommended procedure will result in a paint job that lasts more than a couple of years.

As an aside, we're all familiar with the 3-digit paint code identifying the car color. From 1978 on, these paint codes include a 4th digit identifying the paint manufacturer. from Dec 1988 on, a 5th digit was added to identify the paint type (solvent or water-based). For example:

4th Digit

---------

1=BASF (Glasurit)

2=Herberts (Standox)

3=Beckers

4=IDAC/DuPont

5=Sikkens (AKZO)

8=IVI

(6,7,9 not used)

5th digit

---------

1=solvent based

2=water based metallic/pearl+varnish

3=water based solid+varnish

4=solvent based solid+varnish

5=solvent based pearl shine+varnish

6=water based solid/metallic/pearl+2component varnish

7=water based solid/metallic/pearl+powder varnish

(8,9 not used)
