S70 Auto Transmission Fluid Check--How? S70 2000

I was told that the car needs to be running in order to check the fluid. Is this correct? Also, the dipstick has a "cold and hot" marks. What do you consider "cold" Is 15 minutes of running time considered to be "cold." Finally, where do I add the fluid?
