Light reduction in DIM, odometer, temp, shift position, radio display gone V70-XC70 2002

I want to relate a failure I ran into and how I found the cause, in hopes it can help someone in the community. The intensity of the lighting of all the LCD panels (DIM, odometer, trip, outside temperature, shifter position, clock) went to almost nothing, barely visible at night, hopeless during the day. The radio display went off completely. All those were operational, just their display was barely visible. The speedo, tach, gas and temp gauges were all fine, and the lighting on them was good.
My headlight switch was in the ON position, and I noticed that moving the dimmer knob did not change anything, but more importantly, the headlight switch itself could be moved to parking lights and OFF and yet headlights stayed on, did not even blink when switching from one position to another. I took a chance and stopped by the local U Pull It yard, purchased the headlight switch and in 5 minutes my displays are all back to normal.
BTW, I am amazed at how complex a headlight switch can be (i opened the old one), and how it can do the switching of headlights, dimming of lights, fog lights and fuel door functions with three thin wires. Obviously there are other components and relays in the system.
