Keyless remote not working in cold weather 850 1997

Tried to open the doors on my 850 with the remote when it was 14F above. Nothing. Opened the door mechanically, started the engine, drove around, parked, and locked it with the remote, and later, opened it with the remote. Are the batteries getting weak in my remote, or is the problem to do with the car? I anticipate this happening more and more often and would like to correct it before it becomes more frequent. Somebody please advise
