winter driving on summer tires 850 1995

i know this sounds silly, but has anyone had experience with bridgestone potenza s-02 pole positions on snow? don't really feel like shelling out 800 bucks for a new set of rims (need 17" cause of brembo big brake kit) and snow tires just so i can take one or two trips up to tahoe from sf. got cables when chains are required...
