Service Light 850 1996

I just bought a used 1996 850GLT with 100k. I do not have a manual for it. The service light just started go on when I first start it. It stays on for about 2 minutes then turns off. What usually triggers this feature on? I don't want to take it to garage if it is nothing, can I turn this off myself and how do you do it?
